A Homeowner’s Checklist Before House Washing
A good house-washing appointment starts before the equipment arrives. Clear access and a short conversation about your home can help the work go smoothly. Use this checklist when planning exterior cleaning in Canton, Holly Springs, Woodstock or another North Metro Atlanta service area.
Confirm exactly what is included
“House washing” can mean different things in different estimates. Clarify which walls, trim and porch areas are included. Ask whether roof surfaces, driveway, gutters or patio are separate services. Share photos of each area you want assessed, and make sure the written scope matches those photos.
Point out existing problems
Tell the cleaner about peeling paint, loose siding, damaged seals, gaps around fixtures and any history of water intrusion. Photograph visible damage before service. Cleaning is not a repair, and the right plan may involve fixing a vulnerable area first. Mention oxidation or unusual staining so it can be assessed rather than treated as ordinary dirt.
Make access practical
Discuss gates, parking and where equipment can be set up.
Confirm water availability and any access limitations with the contractor.
Identify fragile landscaping, decorative items and areas needing special care.
Ask which outdoor furniture, vehicles and portable items should be moved.
Make a plan for children and pets to stay clear of the work area.
Check openings and outdoor items
Follow the contractor’s preparation instructions for windows, doors and removable items. Report openings that do not close securely. Bring in belongings that should not get wet, and ask how exterior outlets, cameras, lights and other fixtures will be approached. Do not improvise coverings or climb to reach difficult areas without discussing the need first.
Plan around the household
Tell the team if someone works from home, uses a particular entrance or needs uninterrupted access. If you are in an HOA, check any relevant community rules or scheduling requirements. Arrange a contact who can answer questions during the work. Weather and surface conditions may affect timing, so leave room to confirm the appointment plan.
Review results with realistic expectations
Ask about a walkthrough and which marks may remain. Rust, oil, oxidation, failing paint and worn finishes are different problems from removable buildup. Compare the completed work with the agreed scope. If you plan to paint or seal afterward, ask the coating manufacturer or installer about preparation and drying requirements.
